Our History
CBC, the Chesapeake Bristol Club was founded by a few enthusiastic Bristol sailboat owners in 1974. The Club was formed to promote the sport of sailing and in the early days, racing. The CBC founding principles included the promotion of technical know-how, education, social enjoyment and fellowship.
The first social event of the newly formed Club was a dinner party held in Annapolis during the Autumn of 1974. The inaugural event established 1974 as the year of the Club's foundation. That first dinner was held at the Bay Ridge Catering Hall(which is now the site of the Philip Merrill Environmental Center of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation). The number of people present was reported to be around 50-60. Many of them were familiar names who later went on to be officers and contributing founders of the Club. In that first year, there were numerous organizational meetings as well as recruiting by mail and phone to Bristol customer lists. The first official CBC race and raftup was held on July 20/21, 1975. The race started at the old "spider" mark in Annapolis Harbor and ended at Swan Creek with a raftup of 19 boats. In the early years, the membership was limited to Bristol sailboat owners with a great emphasis on racing to various destinations around the Bay. As the years progressed, CBC membership and nature of the club has changed. Today, the boats are evenly split between Bristol and non Bristol sailboats. Members now own a diverse array of sailboats from over 25 different manufacturers. CBC has evolved into a cruising club. We have no clubhouse so we sail to get together on the water. Our activities include planned cruises, informal weekend rendezvous, shore party destinations, etc. To see our most recent schedule of activities, destinations and planned events, click on CALENDAR to see some of our most recent events. CBC now enjoys the reputation as one of the oldest, friendliest and most active sailing clubs on the Chesapeake Bay. CBC always welcomes prospective members who enjoy sailing and fellowship on the water. For more information on how to join us, click on MEMBERSHIP |
